At certain periods throughout the year, Congress leaves Washington DC on recess for various observations. It is easiest to set up meetings with your Representative and Senators during these recess periods.

Each member of Congress maintains at least one district office. Most often, the main district office is located nearest the member's hometown. During time away from Washington DC, members meet with constituents. In election years, they travel through their home state or district, appearing at functions and setting up meetings with constituents around those functions.

For ADA members, this presents a tremendous opportunity. Members can organize a meeting of nutrition professionals and ask their representative or senator to attend. ADA's government relations staff can work with members to develop salient messages that need to be delivered or to provide updates on the status of relevant legislation.

If you are interested in public policy efforts, call ADA's Washington DC office at (800) 877-0877 or visit the ADA's website on Advocacy & the Profession.
