FNCE® 2013

Highlights of PHCNPG @ FNCE® 2013
The 2013 Food & Nutrition Conference & ExpoTM (FNCE®), the annual meeting of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, was held October 19-22, 2013 in Houston, TX. Here are highlights from PHCNPG at FNCE®!

House of Delegates Meeting
Margaret Tate (Delegate), Bonnie Bradley (Chair-Elect) and Lauren Melnick (Secretary) attended the House of Delegates Meeting. The Mega Issue discussed was "Nutrition Services Delivery and Payment: The Business of Every Academy Member". While we typically think of this issue in the context of clinical practice and direct services, this issue is very pertinent to public health and community nutrition dietitians. For example, program outcomes are essential to justify funding and continued programming. Visit the PHCNPG HOD page for more information on the issue.

PHCNPG Executive Committee Meeting
Nicole Larson (Chair) led the Executive Committee in their first face-to-face meeting of the 2013-2014 year. The new mission, vision and goals were used as a catalyst to develop initiatives for the upcoming year. Stay tuned! Executive Commitee meeting minutes will soon be available on the Members Only site under the PHCNPG Leadership tab for members to view, a new feature for members!

ASPHN / PHCNPG Partnership Update
Beginning in January 2013, PHCNPG partnered with ASPHN to work toward out mutual goals related to improving the nation's health. The Executive Commitee discussed ways in which PHCNPG and ASPHN could work together to provide benefits for their members, such as offering members CPEUs through webinars or a symposium. We will continue to provide updates to PHCNPG members through The Digest.

DPG Town Hall Meeting
Lauren Melnick, Takako Tagami and Jessy Barron presented a session on Best Practices entitled "New Approach to Member Involvement: Developing a Strategic Plan". The purpose of the project was to use technology and member involvement to update and align the 2009 PHCNPG Strategic Plan to the Academy's Strategic Plan within a six-month time frame at minimal cost to the DPG. Through their approach, the PHCNPG mission, vision and goals were successfully updated and approved by the Academy in May 2013.

DPG/MIG Showcase
Thanks to all of our current members that stopped by to say "Hi" and those who came by looking for opportunities to get more involved. One way that PHCNPG members can get involved is by volunteering on committees. PHCNPG garnered interest from many potential members, and students completed a survey that will be used to improve services to students.

PHCNPG Business and Networking Meeting
Approximately 70 members attended the PHCNPG networking tea Monday afternoon. Bonnie Bradley (Arkansas Department of Health) and Judy Klavens-Giunta (New Jersey SNAP-Ed) highlighted their unique work related to public health nutrition programs, and PHCNPG members who were recipients of DPG and Academy awards were recognized.

The Mothers' Room

The Mothers' Room at FNCE® provides breastfeeding mothers a private, comfortable place to breastfeed their infant or pump and store their milk while at the conference center. Takako Tagami (Past Chair) led the efforts for this year's room which was staffed by numerous volunteers from PHCNPG, the Women's Health DPG, the Pediatric Nutrition DPG, and students through the Student Host Program. Check out our new video produced by Kay Sisk (Website Chair) and Catherine Metzgar (Technology Chair) to learn more about the Mothers' Room!
